If you read the very first sentence of the article, you will observe the sentence, "The U.S. began as a haven for Christian outcasts".

This is one of the great American national myths. It is a view of the world that does not convey the whole truth and it needs to be challenged. No-one told the 'Pilgrim Fathers' to leave England, they decided to go for their own reasons. They could easily have remained where they were, but to do that they would have had to obey laws which tolerated other forms of Christian worship than their own. In fact one can visit the church in Boston, England to this day, the one they left from and see that there were many Christians from there who never did leave, and who were not in any way treated as outcasts by anyone.

There were also many many other colonists who went to American for reasons that had nothing at all to with religion.

Your comment has no connection with the proposed subject, if I am not mistaken. Or when Christian publish a stupid prejudices about Islam, it's for you this not a gesture born of hate?
If the priest is free for what it is not married?

The Pilgrims didn't go there for freedom to practice their Christian religion. They were already free to practice it.

What they were not free to do was impose their hate-filled brand on other people. So they left.
